Our 70th Anniversary is an opportunity to reflect on our past and look ahead to our future. We want to recognise the thousands of young people whose lives have been shaped by their time at sea with us, as well as the incredible supporters, volunteers and crew who make our vital work possible.
As part of the celebrations, we’ve brought together a collection of stories and photographs from the past 70 years, for you to explore and discover the impact TSYT has had on young people since 1956.
"10 years later and with many voyages undertaken as a volunteer Watch Leader, my connection with TSYT continues. What a great organisation!"
"Those lessons have stayed with me ever since, and that fantastic experience prompted me to sail with the Malcolm Miller and Sir Winston Churchill more than twenty further times."
"At 17, I thought the challenge was getting myself to the top of the A-frame. Looking back, I was learning something much more important: there is strength in asking for help, and incredible power in having good people around you who believe in you.
That voyage gave me far more than an adventure across the Atlantic. It gave me confidence, resilience, and lessons I still carry today."
"I sailed on the Sir Winston Churchill in 1996 for two weeks and it was an experience like no other. I've held those special memories close to my heart ever since and always will."
"The trips taught me confidence, teamwork, leadership and humility. I remain convinced that those experiences helped secure my position with the British Antarctic Survey."
"My 1st ever sail, aged 14, was with a youth training trust and it led to an amazing 26 year sailing career. I am so happy to see so many more young people being able to have that same chance."
To celebrate the dedication and outstanding contributions of the people who make TSYT so special, we’re opening nominations for four special 70th Anniversary Recognition Awards.
Whether you nominate someone special, for our awards, join us at our anniversary event, or take on a ’70 for 70′ fundraising challenge, we’d love for you to celebrate this milestone with us and help chart the course for the next seven decades.
