XF260511B – Cross Keys Homes – City of Peterborough Academy
Ten young people from Cross Keys Homes and City of Peterborough Academy, aged between 12 and 15, swapped dry land for the open sea. Here’s what happened.
Day 1
This boat is very fun but at the same time can be very rocky and kind of makes you dizzy.
The journey from Portsmouth to Cowes was very fun and we had amazing learning opportunities, such as setting a sail and how to set the boat up. Some things were very tricky, but we solved them using teamwork in a positive way.
Tyler: My highlight of the day was setting up the sail, such as clipping it to the mast so we could hoist it up later. I had help from another one of my crew mates and have already learnt the importance of teamwork.
Damien: My highlight of the day was when we left the harbour.
Jin: My highlight of the day was when I ate food.

Day 2
It was a peaceful morning and the sunrise was amazing. Then we got to work straight away by unpacking the sail and putting it in the hatch. We put the mainsail up first, and then the two headsails. We had plenty of practice on winching! After this we had a beautiful chicken wrap for lunch.
After dodging artillery fire, Summer called the range at Lulworth and they told us a safe distance to travel. After this we did a man overboard drill and Emerson rescued a fender — and then he decided to take a swim.
We were going towards Weymouth and spotted a stranded fisherman with a broken engine and had to tow him to the docks at Weymouth to get him to the coastguard.
We went out for a wander around Weymouth and got back to start cooking dinner whilst the other group had showers. We dished up fajitas and once finished went for showers whilst the other group cleaned up.
After dinner we had a talk about how sailing can harm the environment and how it can also be eco-friendly, then played some games. Tomorrow we are heading to Poole.
