Voyage highlights
This five-day voyage for 12-15-year-olds is the perfect introduction to sail training
Whether you’re an experienced dingy sailor or a complete novice this adventure gives you the chance to learn the fundamentals of sailing. The adventure takes place onboard our 55ft ketch where as well as learning new skills you get to explore the Solent — one of the world’s most famous sailing waters and the South Coast.
You’ll sail through the Solent and then along the stunning South Coast. Be sure to have your camera to hand, as you may spot dolphins, seals and fin whales.
Likely stopovers include Cowes, Poole and Weymouth.
New skills. Increased confidence. New friendships. Memories.
Over the course of the voyage, you’ll experience steering a yacht, sail handling, ropework as well as learning how to keep safe onboard. If conditions permit, you may also get to anchor offshore overnight or do some night sailing.
We divide the crew into two teams (watches) – traditionally, known as Port and Starboard. In your watches, you’ll take it in turns to be involved in all aspects of sailing the ketch from looking after her to cooking and cleaning.
This voyage is a great opportunity to meet new friends, build your confidence and widen your sailing experience.
We hope you’ll enjoy it so much you want to book a further voyage to complete your RYA Competent Crew qualification! Just ask our sailing staff for more information on this.
Each crew member will receive a personal assessment covering their leadership, teamwork and communication skills — a great addition to your personal record of achievement.
You’ll hopefully get the chance to complete your RYA Start Yachting qualification while you’re onboard.
The cost of your RYA Start Yachting certificate is included in the price. RYA logbooks are available for purchase onboard at a cost of £6 (Skippers are only able to take cash for this).
The Skipper will determine the final route depending on weather and other variables.
There’s a possibility you could be recommended by the Skipper to come back and volunteer as a Watch Assistant or Watch Leader for future Tall Ships Youth Trust voyages.
Meals onboard are included.
If you or the person you’re booking for, is unable to take part in this voyage due to any of the following:
- The area you’re travelling from, or to, has issued a COVID travel ban
- You test positive for coronavirus (and can supply proof)
- You’re asked to self-isolate (and can supply proof)
We’ll offer you a credit that can be used as payment, or part payment, for a future reservation booked within six months from the date of cancellation. For more information, please contact: reservations@tallships.org
