Voyage of Exploration - no sailing experience necessary

Treat your 12-15-year olds to a New Year’s Eve to remember sailing on board one of Tall Ships Youth Trust’s iconic 72ft Challenger yachts!

This four-night adventure is the perfect starter voyage for them to learn the basics of sailing and work towards and achieve your RYA Start Yachting qualification.

As a TSYT ‘Voyage of Exploration’ crew members do not require any prior experience of sailing. The voyage will enable them to explore the ocean environment while learning new skills, developing confidence and self-esteem, and increasing social and communication skills.

Places you'll visit

You’ll sail through the Solent and then along the stunning south coast. Be sure to have your camera to hand, as you may spot dolphins, seals and fin whales. Likely stopovers include CowesPoole and Weymouth.

Takeaways from your sailing adventure

New skills. Increased confidence. New friendships. Memories.

Throughout the week, you’ll experience steering the yacht, sail handling, ropework as well as learning how to keep safe on board. If conditions permit, you’ll also get to do some night sailing too.

We divide the crew into two teams (watches) – traditionally, known as Port and Starboard. In your watches, you’ll take it in turns to be involved in all aspects of sailing the Challenger from deck duties to cooking and cleaning.

Each crew member will receive a personal assessment covering their leadershipteamwork and communication skills— a great addition to your personal record of achievement.

RYA

You may get the chance to complete the RYA Start Yachting course while on board.

The cost of your RYA certificate is included in the price.

RYA logbooks are available for purchase on board at a cost of £6 (Skippers are only able to take cash for this).

Further information

The Skipper will determine the final route depending on weather and other variables.

There’s a possibility you could be recommended by the Skipper to come back and volunteer as a Watch Assistant or Watch Leader for future Tall Ships Youth Trust voyages.

Meals on board are included.
