Voyage highlights
This nine-day island-hopping voyage is the perfect way to see in the new year for those looking to escape the cold UK winter.
Each year, hundreds of yachts gather across the islands in a traditional carnival atmosphere to celebrate the occasion.
Your adventure will start and finish in Tenerife’s Santa Cruz which is situated in the middle of the Canary Islands.
The islands boast a subtropical climate making them a highly popular tourist destination. Even in the winter months, temperatures rarely dip below 18 degrees and the weather is mainly sunny. The sea temperature is also consistently close to 22 degrees.
Throughout the voyage you’ll work with like-minded individuals aged 18-80 and spend full days sailing, while relishing in the welcome winter sun.
You’ll enjoy adrenaline-fuelled sailing between the diverse coastlines and varied landscapes of the group of islands, which has long been popular with experienced sailors for their stronger winds in the acceleration zones between the islands.
In addition, your adventure will support our life-changing youth development voyage programme. Proceeds from our adult voyages enable us to provide bursaries for young people, who wouldn’t be able to take part in a voyage without financial support.
After the Challenger returns to Santa Cruz, the boat will undergo checks and preparation in readiness for the three-week voyage back to Portsmouth, which sets sail on Wednesday 10 January. So, if you fancy extending your winter-sun adventure, click here for more details.
If you’re interested in more than one Canary Islands voyage, you can take advantage of our exclusive bundle offering. Contact our Reservations Team for more information: reservations@tallships.org
The Canary Islands are home to a diverse range of terrains including cliffs, sandy beaches, fertile farmlands, craggy mountains, olive groves and rocky coves, and each of the regions has its own individual character.
Non-sailing days can be spent exploring these stunning islands, but you will be responsible for organising your own tours and leisure activities, so a Lonely Planet Guide is a good investment!
It’s likely you’ll visit ‘La Isla Bonita’ La Palma, the stunning La Gomera and Tenerife where you can visit the world-renowned volcano and national park, Mount Teide, which rises more than 7,500 metres above the ocean floor, making it world’s third tallest volcanic structure.
New skills. Increased confidence. New friendships. Winter sun!
Throughout your voyage, there will be lots of opportunities to explore and capture memories, so be sure to pack your camera! In addition to the stunning views, you may also spot marine wildlife such as, dolphins, seals and fin whales.
While spending full days sailing, you’ll experience steering the yacht, sail handling, ropework, and learn how to keep safe onboard.
Our crews get involved in every aspect of running the vessel, so expect to be working in a watch system and taking your turn at helming, sail handling, cooking and cleaning throughout.
Once we receive your booking, we’ll need to review all of the information you’ve provided including your medical history, and so your voyage will not be confirmed until you’ve received an email accepting your booking. Please do not book any travel for the trip prior to receiving this email.
The Skipper will determine the final route depending on the weather and other variables.
For this voyage, we recommend you pack shorts and t-shirts as well as warmer clothes, as it can get feel cooler while sailing and in the evenings.
If you share our values and are keen to do more, you may be able to support our mission further by joining the TSYT Volunteer Crew.
Your Skipper can recommend you for our Watch Leader training programme, if they feel you have the skills and attributes that we’re looking for.
All meals onboard are included.
You’ll hopefully get the chance to complete the RYA Competent Crew course while you’re onboard.
The cost of your RYA certificate is included in the price.
RYA logbooks are available for purchase onboard at a cost of £6 (Skippers are only able to take cash for this).
All our voyages of four nights or more qualify for the residential section of the DofE Gold Award.
Please let our Reservations Team know before sailing if you want to use the voyage for this.
You’ll be asked to enter your passport details as part of the booking process. If you don’t have these to hand, please contact us as soon as possible after submitting your booking form to let us know your details, as we cannot accept your booking without this information.
You will also need to present your valid passport to the Skipper at the start of the voyage.
