TSYT LAUNCHES 70 YEARS APPEAL AS NEED FOR NATIONWIDE YOUTH SUPPORT INCREASES
Tall Ships Youth Trust (TSYT), the UK’s oldest and largest youth development sail training charity, has officially launched its 70th anniversary appeal. This comes at a time when today’s young people are facing unprecedented challenges, from mental health pressures and deep social isolation to financial hardship.
Since it first set sail in 1956, the charity has welcomed more than 125,000 young people on board its iconic fleet, covering over two million nautical miles – that’s over 90 times round the world! Yet, as the trust celebrates seven decades of youth development on the ocean, it warns that the barriers facing the next generation are increasingly rising. Public support is urgently required to ensure these life-changing voyages remain accessible to all young people, no matter their background or financial circumstances.
The ‘70 Years Appeal’ showcases the profound, long-term impact of a single week at sea through a remarkable 14-year journey of transformation.
Growing up in a community marked by poverty, Elouise had never been on holiday and could never imagine herself doing something like sailing. Feeling trapped by her circumstances, she was offered a life-changing TSYT bursary at 19 years old. It gave her the opportunity to step outside her comfort zone and onto the water. Away from everyday pressures, she found a crew, a purpose, and a strength she did not know she had.
Today, Elouise is a serving Royal Navy Sailor, and she credits the charity with completely altering the course of her entire future.
Elouise said: “Sailing changed my life. It opened the world up for me. It made me realise that actually these things are possible for a kid growing up with not a lot of money.”
Alastair Floyd, Chief Executive of Tall Ships Youth Trust, emphasises the critical importance of the appeal: “Out on the water, something truly remarkable happens. Traditional limitations fall away. Our unique three-voyage programme isn’t just about learning to sail; it is a progressive journey developing mindset, resilience and leadership where young people (aged 12-25) are supported through a series of voyages that steadily increase in length and challenge.
“In just a matter of days on board, they move from isolation to teamwork, taking on real responsibility and discovering strengths they never knew they had. Today, the need for this kind of support is continuously increasing. Young people are facing overwhelming challenges – from poverty to severe mental health pressures. We want to make our life-changing voyages accessible to every young person, no matter what their background or financial barriers. But we cannot do it alone. We need the public’s help to change young lives for the next 70 years.”
The public is being asked to back the campaign through inviting supporters to give a special anniversary gift of £70, or whatever they can donate. Crucially, every 70 gifts of £70 would help fund three life-changing youth development voyages, breaking down financial barriers for those that are hardest hit by modern societal pressures.
