A group of St John Ambulance Cadets from Cambridgeshire join for a four-night Exploration voyage. Follow their journey below.

Challenger 4 | Voyage XF250414

Day 2

Tuesday, 15 April

On this day, we sailed from Cowes to Lymington. This voyage took around about 4 hours.

During this time, we learned how to put up the main sail and take it down – without getting stuck in it! We also learned how to perfect our winching technique. At lunch we had filled wraps and very sillily, Alice said to Sue “Tuna, would you like Sue?” This made everyone (but Alice) laugh. At the end of our journey we witnessed the amazing watch leader Steve park the boat for the first time!

When we arrived at Lymington, we packed up the boat and took a walk through the town. Even though it was cold we met the lovely ice cream man, Bob from Toot Sweets. Bob was bald, quiet, and nonchalant.  (Josh 2 also kept believing his name was David) and got ice cream. Aswell as that, we got chips from the local chippy.

We look forward to the 4:00 am wake-up call to start racing against Challenger 1 around the Isle of Wight.

Day 3

Wednesday, 16 April

At the start of our voyage today, we woke up at 4am. We did this because we planned to start early to ensure we left the dock with water that was a suitable depth. However, after the TSYT staff assessed the weather that would be accompanying us: the conclusion made was that we would all go back to bed and wake up around 7:30am instead.

After waking up and getting ready, our team was assigned the job to begin making breakfast for the whole crew (although, Sue actually did the cooking for us beforehand since nobody in our team had woken up early enough to do it).

When our team had appeased their appetites, we then went up the stairs to commence deck prep. This consisted of:

  • getting out all the winch handles and returning them to their original locations,
  • taking off the main sail cover and packing it away,
  • taking off the instrument panel covers,
  • and loosened the mooring lines.

A while later, the other team joined us on deck. We – as a team of people: fully undid the mooring lines, brought them back to the ship, and dragged them down to winches; tied them up after coiling, wrapping, and knotting the lines; then returned them to the wet locker and began to set sail on course for the Isle of Wight, Cowes.

A day prior to today we planned a race with the other Challenger boat. To get prepped for this we:

  • got the main sail out,
  • also put up the storm sail (due to predicted and presently acting gusts),
  • and practiced tacking and jybing.

Unfortunately, after practice had concluded, the other team had to sadly withdrawal from the race., so we were undoubted winners – morally, practically, spiritually, in our hearts and by default. #doingcambridgeshireproud
