Debdale Outdoor Centre
A group of young people aged 14 to 17 from Debdale Outdoor Centre set off from Greenock for an unforgettable sailing adventure around Scotland aboard Challenger. Over the voyage, the crew learned new sailing skills, worked together to hoist sails, tack and helm the boat, and took on challenges including mast climbing, spinnaker pole climbing and a man-overboard procedure.
Along the way, they encountered dolphins, seals and their babies, explored Tarbert and Campbeltown, braved the Scottish weather and enjoyed plenty of good food — including fish and chips from an actual chippy, which was apparently banging. There were also lots of naps, snacks, questionable jokes, games of murder, Taylor Swift at 7am and, according to Zach, several very important updates involving poo.
Here is their voyage story, told in their own words.
Day 1
Ahoy from the unicorn floatie. We all had an early wake-up call to get to Debdale for 7am, and we were all mostly half asleep. However, we were all very energetic and excited to leave from the My Little Pony coast of Greenock. Our rainbow wake attracted five dolphins, who stalked us all the way on our journey to Holy Loch.
Halfway across the journey, we popped up the staysail using our magical powers of sweating the sail up for about 10 minutes. Lily lifted up 70% of the sail because she’s a queen.
We practised tacking using our newly acquired sail before eventually ending up in the marina at Holy Loch. In the evening, we ate some delicious spaghetti bolognese, cooked professionally by Port Watch.
We then finished the evening by playing Codenames and planning our route for the next day.
Overall, it was a very fulfilling and happy day 😊.
Peace out from Lily, George, Anya, Joe and Frederick.
Day 2
Today we started with a 7 o’clock wake-up call, followed by cereal. The blue skies of Holy Loch… (Zach would like for you to know he did a poo). (Evie doesn’t know why he wants you to know this??)
Upon figuring out we had no wind, we had to improvise. With the help of the engine, we set off on our way to Tarbert Harbour.
A spark of magic meant we also got to see some seals, as well as their babies! It was very exciting.
Once we had moved on from the seal epidemic, we worked together to raise the spinnaker pole to commence some spinnaker climbing. Like last year, Joe, being the beast he is, climbed the spinnaker in record time with no help at all. (Like a boss.) Funnily enough, everyone else needed some assistance.
Once spinnaker climbing had finished, we had some lovely quesadillas made by Anya, Joe, George, Frederick and Lily. Whilst this was happening… somewhere above, Evie, Grace, Zach, Boo and Callum were left with the agonising task of pumping up the floating dinghy. (I would like to burn all foot pumps! – Evie.)
Directly after lunch, we put on our swimming costumes and went for a swim in the salty Scottish seas. With no concern for the seals beneath us, we launched ourselves from the side of the boat. (After whining about how cold we were.) (One toe in the water, really, but whatever.)
Zach, Joe and Boo all climbed across the spinnaker with no assistance, all for the bribe of a bag of sweets.
Okay, we’ve kicked Zach out of the booth and took ages arguing about what to write… so we need to go to bed.
What’s a pirate’s favourite letter? The C!
Day 3
We had a lazy morning in at 8 o’clock, ate delicious bacon butties and prepared ourselves for the day ahead.
Today, the forecast lacked wind, so instead we planned a day of mast climbing and a little excursion off to Tarbert Castle.
We began by prepping the mast for our trips up, up and beyond. (Haha, Toy Story reference… get it? No? Okay…)
Frederick managed to gain the courage to climb to the second set of spreaders, conquering last year’s feat. Evie, Callum and George all took Richard (a stuffed cyclops) up the mast! We got several lovely photos of the views from above.
Once everyone had finished climbing the mast, we put everything away, took a quick trip to the marina loos and, long at last, we set off for our walk towards Tarbert Castle. We took many photos. (Who decided to put so many stairs on the side of a mountain?)
After our quick trip to the castle, our greedy desires fell into place and we visited Co-op! We bought many snacks and finally made our way back to the boat.
Afterwards, we set off for Campbeltown. Halfway to our destination, it began to rain and pour. We pulled on our waterproofs and tried to brave the weather, but were ultimately defeated. Anya complained, and Evie, Simon, Anya and George all had a nap in the saloon. Callum snacked on his biscuits, while Zach listened to music, until eventually we were called back on deck, where we found Grace’s life jacket had gotten so wet it quite literally exploded.
Therefore, we did a man-overboard procedure! It was very pleasant in the rain and cold (sarcasm 100?).
Long at last, we braved the weather one last time to dock in Campbeltown, where, and get this… WE HAD FISH AND CHIPS from an actual chippy. It was banging.
Finally, we showered and headed for bed. (George wanted you to know we went to bed on time.)
Day 4
Today we woke to the wonderful voice of Taylor Swift blasting through the speaker at 7AM. Zach wants you to know about his dream of being a hitman. This is all I’m putting in about his dream.
Once Zach was finished chatting my ear off about needing a poo and doing his little dance, we enjoyed a lovely breakfast of toast and eggs.
Once breakfast had passed, we faced the doom and gloomy weather for the day (Rain and Wind [The best wind for sailors]). We put up all of our sails today! Joe and Zach enjoyed leading the group towards putting up the spinnaker pole and finally relaxed into the rhythm of the day.
Zach would like for you to know he spent a majority of the afternoon helming until… Evie killed him with a bowl. (Boat Murder.) He insists he was already suspicious of her… and yet somehow still died?
But funnily enough, Gordon then killed Evie with a banana in the wet locker, to which she is still fuming about.
For lunch, we had an enjoyable delicacy of beans and hash browns. According once again to Zach, “men can multi-task”, because he ate whilst steering. (I hope my fellow girls can understand the eye roll I did upon hearing this.)
For dinner, we had a wonderfully cooked beef stew with bread. Evie gave all her peas to Grace, who LOVES peas.
Hi guys, it’s Evie writing this, and just to let you know, Zach has become very enamoured with Joe’s Duolingo, whilst Callum, for some reason, is singing In the Jungle in the background?
It’s been a good Tall Ships, and tomorrow we set sail for Greenock to head home. I’ve had 5 naps today, 5!
Okay bye.
