St. Michael’s CE Middle School’s Transformational Offshore Adventure
Ten students from St. Michael’s CE Middle School in Wimborne recently returned from an unforgettable voyage at sea with Tall Ships Youth Trust. For many of them, stepping aboard a 72ft ocean-going yacht meant stepping far outside their comfort zones, and discovering they were capable of far more than they’d ever imagined.
From the Classroom to the Ocean
The students embarked on an offshore sailing adventure that asked everything of them. Supported by generous bursary funding from TSYT, the young crew took on every aspect of life at sea.
⚓ Helmed the yacht through real conditions
⚓ Hoisted sails
⚓ Navigated night sails from Studland to Cowes
⚓ Climbed the mast
⚓ Cooked meals for a crew of 15
For many, these weren’t idle activities, they were genuine challenges that required courage, teamwork, and determination.
The Real Impact
A significant number of the crew were already facing additional challenges in their lives, both at home and at school. For them, this voyage was more than an adventure, it was an opportunity to rebuild confidence and discover resilience.
“Our pupils benefitted enormously from this experience. A significant number of our crew face additional challenges in their lives, and this voyage was an invaluable opportunity to build their confidence and perseverance. They faced real challenges – from managing sea nausea to stepping up into leadership roles and climbing out on the spinnaker pole – and learnt that with teamwork and determination, they can overcome all sorts of challenges. Many parents have already commented on the incredible difference in their children since returning.”

Skills That Last
Beyond mastering sailing skills, the crew built lasting friendships and learnt lessons that will stay with them for life. As they prepare for the transition to upper school in September, they’re carrying forward a new sense of resilience, independence, and the knowledge that they’re capable of handling real challenge.

The Bigger Picture
This partnership between St. Michael’s CE Middle School and Tall Ships Youth Trust is part of our broader commitment to ensuring that young people from all backgrounds regardless of their circumstances have access to transformational experiences at sea.
When young people are trusted with real responsibility, supported by experienced crews, and given genuine challenge, they discover strengths they didn’t know they had.
That discovery changes everything.
