Greenock Exploration Voyage
Ahoy! Ten young people aged 16–25 set sail on an adventure from Tarbert to Greenock, swapping everyday life for life aboard Challenger 1. With pirates lurking in every port, mysterious creatures in the deep, rival ships on the horizon and plenty of challenges along the way, this crew certainly didn’t have an ordinary voyage.
Follow their journey as they take on sailing, teamwork, new experiences and an impressive amount of pirate-related chaos.
Day 1
We began the long and torturous journey from Tarbert, travelling excruciatingly slowly, making our way to Greenock. Once we arrived, our group met with our leaders. The GOAT, Alex, met us at the pier and aided us in the challenge of carrying our heap of luggage to the pirate ship.
We were introduced to the rest of our new crew. Our mate, Jolly Josh, provided us with juice upon entering. Our watch keepers, Golden Gordon and Shining Sharon, prepared us for our voyage, explaining the looming threat of enemy pirates in every port.
Once we were shown the ropes… and the winches, we set off, entering the dangerous waters of the River Clyde. On our travels, we encountered many rival seafarers travelling dangerously close to our ship, rich in gold. Our team varied their jobs, needing to understand the importance of every role to succeed in this life.
When arriving into port, we were ambushed… Somebody had stolen a specially reserved space that was allocated to Challenger 1. We tacked, and tacked, and tacked. Captain GOAT was shocked by the audacity of the port and its users. “How dare somebody steal our spot!” he cried.
Soon, we found a greater space, assigned just for us for the troubles. After this, we began storing away today’s equipment, proud of what we had achieved. We were presented with chicken fajitas as a reward for today’s effort.
May the battle continue tomorrow…

Day 2
We began Day 2 in the “pirate ship”. As we left the port, we were met with a fellow pirate warning us of the dangers we may face on our arduous journey to the Buccaneer hub known as ‘Campbeltown’.
On the way, we passed many ships from various factions, but there wasn’t any trouble so far. As we passed through the narrow and dangerous waters surrounding the Isle of Bute, we were blessed by mermaids basking on the rocky shore. We waved and said hello, but they had other plans…
As we continued our journey towards Campbeltown, we were greeted by a creature from the deep that ominously drew closer to our vessel. But alas, we steered in the other direction and left the beast alone.
As we approached the dangerous region of the Sirens, the Kilbrannan Sound, we decided to challenge ourselves in a trial of endurance, using our strength to climb up the spinnaker pole. Many succeeded.
We heard crashes on the starboard side of the vessel and rushed to see the malicious sirens gaining upon us. Our Captain steered in the opposite direction, being wary as the sirens skimmed the edge of the ship. But fortunately, they lost all interest as we didn’t give a scallywag about them.
But alas, the Buccaneers had gained strength and located us, shadowing us from a distance. Captain GOAT made the decision to hoist the Yankee sail to try to evade the grasp of the Buccaneers. At this point, they lost our tail and we could finally relax, so our crew had a rewarding nap after our many challenges of the day.
As the sailors awoke from their slumber, they began to lower the sail and lower the spinnaker pole. We were fast approaching the Buccaneers’ territory, and another skirmish was to be expected.
In the distance, there was a Spanish Galleon, swaying from side to side as the waves gently lapped against the sides of the shipwrecked vessel. They had clearly paid the price from an encounter with the Buccaneers.
Another sailor from a similar-sized ship kindly asked Jolly Josh for his help. We became allies.
Golden Gordon’s little helpers prepared the table. We were about to dig in, but our chips were late. Jolly Josh was the MVP, and so we ate like kings.

Day 3
Scallywag Diary Entry – Episode 3
Dear Diary,
Today we all had a really cheesy time in the morning as we struggled with salami on the starboard side. When we finally got advice on how to eat salamimi applechini, we were all refreshed and ready for the big breakfast ahead. (Put the fries in the bag.)
When we finally finished our big baddie bacon butties, Golden Gordon’s little helpers cleaned up, and everyone got ready to set the baddie brig off.
Jolly Josh COMMANDED US to remove the ropes… which we obliged to.
One of our crew members had to abandon ship due to the unwillingness which her immune system could not handle.
After like two or twee hours, we hoisted the sail, which Jolly Josh COMMANDED US to do… politely.
We look thought we were cooked when the boat started tipping, but Capitano GOAT saved our big baddie bacon butties after we let him cook fr at the helm.
We spotted on the horizon a new foe which we had not yet faced, the privateer ship ‘The Golden Hind’, a 120ft Galleon led by Sir Francis Drakes. But we were against the Spanish, and so was Sir Francis, so we sped past at a solid 7 knots without so much as a warning shot.
Now back for dinner.
We then all had our daily Steal a Galleon gameplay. I stole some Tung Tungs and a couple of Jolly Joshes.
Day 4
In the early hours of the morning, we awoke from our deep slumber and made scrambled eggs and toast to delight our stomachs.
Jolly Josh helped us to hoist the sails almost immediately and sailed around an island, making -20 progress towards our ultimate journey.
When we left, there were many [previously mentioned unnamed enemy nation] ships of the line trying to block our path, but Captain GOAT steered us back onto the right path and dodged all the cannonballs.
We sailed as quickly as our vessel would take us, even going as low as to wash the starboard side of the deck with some nice seawater.
For the rest of the journey, we tacked around, with some excellent steerage from the helm. Some of our bravest sailors climbed out onto the spinnaker pole for no particular reason, but it was all good, as there were no monsters rolling in the deep or sirens trying to spin us off course by singing maliciously.
But when safety is near, so is danger, and immediately afterwards Sir Francis Drake was hot on our stern.
[Crew blog cut short by Sir Francis Drake catching up and forcing all crew members aboard Challenger 1 to go to bed. Truly, his brutality knows no bounds. He also stole all of our baby Tung Tungs.]
