Headlands School
Eight young people aged 14–17 from Headlands School stepped aboard for an exciting week of adventure at sea. From learning the ropes and working together as a crew to taking on new challenges and building confidence, their voyage got off to a fantastic start. Follow along as they share their experiences of life on board, exploring the Solent and discovering what it takes to sail Challenger
Day 1
Today we boarded the boat, where we were given a tour and learned how everything worked. After meeting the crew, we prepared the boat to head out to sea by bringing out the sails, splitting into our two watches, and eventually setting sail.
Once we were out on the water, we completed some important safety briefings and drills. During the sail, we also carried out a Person Overboard (POB) exercise. One of the crew got into a harness and went overboard so we could practise rescuing the buoy, which we had named James.
Later, as we approached Cowes Harbour, we lowered the sails and folded them away neatly. We then split back into our two groups, with one watch working on deck while the other prepared dinner.
For dinner, we had chicken fajitas with vegetables before getting together to discuss what we each wanted to achieve during the week ahead. After dinner, our French teacher, Mr Curren, treated us to a dinosaur impression after being told he was as old as them!

Day 2
Today we set sail for Weymouth. It was a long day on the water, but it was definitely worth it in the end. We had to put up three sails today, compared with just one yesterday. We also had a dinosaur on board… Mr Curran!
Once all three sails were up, it was time to head off. The sailing was nice and smooth until we reached the English Channel, where the waves began to build. The motion of the boat made a few people feel very sleepy – especially Leo and Charlotte.
After plenty of hard work getting the sails back down, we finally entered Weymouth Harbour. Even though we had been the last boat to set sail, we were the first to arrive.
As a reward, we were allowed to head to Weymouth Beach, where we all went for a swim and, of course, splashed Mr Curran… because why not?
