70 Years of Lives Changed at Sea: Share your TSYT story

Over seventy years, thousands of young people and adults have stepped away from the safety of the shore and climbed aboard our yachts. They arrived as individuals – often nervous, uncertain, and facing their own quiet challenges. They returned as crew. Changed, stronger, and ready for whatever life threw at them next.

Whether you knew us as the Sail Training Association or Tall Ships Youth Trust (TSYT), if you have ever voyaged with us, you are a vital part of this incredible legacy and we’d love you to share your TSYT story.

Now, as we prepare to celebrate our landmark 70th anniversary, we want to look back through your eyes. We are creating ‘Stories for Seven Decades’ – a living archive and special exhibition that captures the real, lasting impact of our voyages across the generations.

But to build it, we need you….

We want to hear about the moments that shaped who you are today.

  • Maybe it was a challenge overcome: That freezing 3am night watch when you were exhausted, looking out at the dark ocean, and suddenly realized: “I can actually do this.”
  • Maybe it was a moment of pride: The unforgettable rush of taking the helm for the very first time and feeling the power of the ship in your hands.
  • Maybe it was the people: Meeting a group of total strangers on day one, only to wave goodbye a week later knowing you’d made family for life.

Did your voyage change the direction your life took? Did it spark a lifelong career in the maritime world, or simply give you the quiet confidence to pursue a dream back on land?

Whether you sailed with us just last summer or text-booked your voyage thirty, fifty, or seventy years ago, your story belongs in our celebrations. Every memory, photograph, and testimonial you share helps us paint a picture of the countless lives transformed at sea.

By sharing your story, you aren’t just helping us reminisce – you are helping us show the world why this work matters, inspiring the next generation of young people to step on board and discover what they are truly capable of.

How to share your story

If your life was shaped by TSYT, please take a few moments to share your memories, reflections, or old photographs with us.
