Voyage highlights
Do you love sailing and have a passion for helping young people thrive?
Are you keen to volunteer with a nationwide youth development and outdoor learning charity that has been improving the chances of young people since 1956?
This four-day residential training course with Tall Ships Youth Trust (TSYT) could be the perfect opportunity.
Whether you’re an experienced sailor, a youth worker, or a novice sailor looking to get more involved in ocean-based youth development, this course is designed to give you the tools and confidence to lead, mentor, and support young people on board our Challenger yachts.
The course is open to anyone looking to become a volunteer with TSYT at sea and current Watch Leaders and Youth Mentors looking for a longer training session.
- New to TSYT? This course is the ideal first step towards becoming a volunteer Watch Leader or Youth Mentor. After completion, you’ll need a recommendation from the Skipper to return as a volunteer.
- Already part of the TSYT crew? This course is also a great refresher, or skills boost for existing Watch Leaders and Youth Mentors.
This intensive four-day voyage will introduce you to everything you need to know about being a TSYT Watch Leader or Youth mentor. You’ll live on board one of our iconic 72ft Challenger yachts and join a group of like-minded volunteers-in-training as you:
- Learn the fundamentals of life aboard a Challenger
- Explore TSYT’s mission, values, and youth development approach
- Build confidence in your leadership, teamwork, and mentoring skills
- Understand the roles, routines, and procedures used on our youth voyages
- Develop the tools to support vulnerable young people at sea
For this course, having some previous sailing or youth mentoring experience would help. But more importantly, we’re looking for a willingness to learn and a positive ‘can do’ attitude.
The course costs £350, but if you are new to TSYT and complete the course successfully, you’ll receive a £100 credit. You can use this credit towards a future voyage within 24 months, or to help support a young person from your community to sail with us.
By volunteering with TSYT, you’re helping to transform young lives – particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds – through vital youth development work and outdoor learning at sea.
Our volunteers are a key part of our mission—playing an important role in how we empower young people to build essential life skills (like confidence, resilience and independence) on their journey to adulthood.
Ready to start your journey as a TSYT volunteer?
Join our Watch Leader and Youth Mentor Course and help shape the future of the young people we support —one voyage at a time.
