This August, join us on a seven-day voyage from Portsmouth and explore the beautiful Dorset and Devon coastlines.

Together with like-minded individuals aged 16-25, you’ll learn new skillsgain increased confidence and create lifelong memories.

Throughout the trip onboard our ketch vessel, you’ll work towards achieving your RYA Competent Crew qualification. You can also tick off the residential section of your Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award.

The RYA syllabus includes:

  • Sea terms and parts of a boat, rigging and sails
  • Sail handling
  • Ropework
  • Fire precautions and fighting
  • Personal safety equipment
  • Man overboard
  • Emergency equipment
  • Manners and customs
  • Rules of the ‘road’ (at sea)
  • Dinghies
Places you'll visit

Likely stopovers include Poole and Weymouth. Weymouth is one of the most popular sailing destinations on the south coast and famous for the Dorset Apple cake.

You might also visit the busy Devon fishing town of Brixham where if time allows, you can explore its fish markets and renowned seafood.

Be sure to have your camera to hand, as you may spot dolphins, seals and fin whales along the way.

After a day at sea, most evenings will be spent covering theoryplaying gamesrelaxing and socialising. There will also be the opportunity go ashore when we stopover.

Takeaways from your sailing adventure

New skills. Increased confidence. New friendships. Memories.

Throughout the voyage, you’ll experience steering a yacht, sail handling, ropework as well as learning how to keep safe onboard. If conditions permit, you may also get to anchor offshore overnight or do some night sailing.

We divide the crew into two teams (watches) – traditionally, known as Port and Starboard. In your watches, you’ll take it in turns to be involved in all aspects of sailing the ketch from looking after her to cooking and cleaning.

You’ll also experience plenty of offshore sailing and ‘out of sight of land’ — a great opportunity to escape from it all and to build your confidence as a sailor.

Each crew member will receive a personal assessment covering their leadershipteamwork and communication skills— a great addition to your CV!
