XF260615A – St Michaels Middle School
Nine young people, aged 12 to 15, climbed aboard Challenger 5 for a voyage that would test them, teach them, and give them a few stories worth telling. Here’s how it went.
Day 1
15/06/26
We are being threatened to wake up early, which means that we look horrible and puffy-eyed, and the food is great.
Oakley’s opinion is that Lucy and Sophia are the nicest and the best.
We learnt how to tack and how to work as a team to hoist the sail and put it back down. We got changed into our waterproofs and life jackets, and it was hot until the clouds came out. The wraps were very filling and flavourful. There were a few waves, but we made it through.
At first, Alice felt as if she were being chucked around the boat, but she got used to it and now barely knows she’s on a boat. Sibbie liked eating the food because she was hungry.
Day 2
16/06/2026
We woke up this morning with some difficulty, with the joyous music of California Girls (6:30 is radical ☹). After getting ready, we headed up on deck via the ladder stairs. We prepared the boat for take-off (or as the sailors say, departure).
We left the pontoon and watched it fade away over the horizon — the last bit of land we saw for trillions of switchlength. We helmed. We tugged. We learned knots. And we leaned over 123.27 degrees (Sophia says this is impossible, but we don’t believe her).
We pleaded for showers, and instead we saved Bob (but we are calling him Sam) by risking our lives to save him — he probably would have been squished by another boat. Sibbie was lowered in her rescue gear (after great difficulty getting into the gear).
Given the task of lowering the mainsail, Ruby locked in and climbed the mast and pulled the sail down with great ease (it was a group effort).
Motoring the rest of the way, we rigged lines and fenders, preparing for our touchdown, or arrival. Our first steps on land and we went to Tesco’s. After some persuasion and getting out of cooking, we met up with two of our teachers. We came down and ate dinner, and that brings us to this point, writing this very word.
Thank you.
Ruby, Bradley, Jude and Oskar.
