Please tell us a bit about yourself
I’m a Mate at TSYT, and have been sailing with TSYT since 2022.
I’ve sailed for over 40 years, and never tire of being on boats.
Away from sailing I’m a husband, and dad to two fabulous individuals of whom I’m immensely proud.
Please tell us a bit about your role at Tall Ships Youth Trust
As a member of Offshore Crew, I’m focused on giving every voyage crew member a great experience from the first “hello”. Many of our voyage crew have never been on a boat before and are apprehensive about the adventure ahead. It’s our job to make sure that by the end of the voyage they have achieved their very best and feel part of the Tall Ships family.
As a Mate I’m responsible for teaching young people how to do everything on board, and for ensuring that everyone has a safe and fun time.
I especially enjoy giving our youth crews the opportunity to climb to the top of the mast and out to the end of the spinnaker pole, and to swim from the boat when at anchor.
As part of many of our voyages, I enjoy teaching crew to sail and support learning essential knowledge needed to achieve their RYA Start Yachting and Competent Crew Certificates.
What has been your most memorable moment at Tall Ships Youth Trust?
My first trip with TSYT as a Watch Leader, was a trip up the Irish Sea from Plymouth to my home port of Liverpool with a group of Trainee Watch Leaders. This was a very special opportunity which I shared with a number of current volunteers and staff.
My most recent highlight is having taken part in the Rolex Fastnet Race, a real “bucket list” event, which I hope to repeat.
What is one thing you think people should know about Tall Ships Youth Trust?
Once you have been onboard with TSYT, your view of the world will have changed forever.
Whether you are a young voyage crew member gaining new experience, or a TSYT volunteer supporting a voyage, you’ll face challenge and achieve your very best as part of the TSYT family.
Please describe your job in three words
Rewarding, Exciting, Fun.
If you were famous, what would you be famous for?
My ability to drink tea by the gallon, and eat biscuits by the packet!
