Naval Children Charity Sailing in Greenock

By Bolade - July 30th, 2025 | Posted in Voyager blogs No comments

Our Greenock regional hub is buzzing with activity this year! We’re delighted to welcome the Naval Children’s Charity aboard for their Scottish exploration voyage, running from Tuesday 29th July to Saturday 2nd August on Challenger 2!

Follow their journey in their own words below:

Day 1

Tuesday, 29 July

We started off the day at 12:45 where we headed over to the boat with the people, we would be spending our time on the boat with, then we put all of our bags in our rooms and decided who was sleeping in what bed.

It was certainly different to what I was expecting the rooms to look like but not in a bad way.

Then we all headed up onto the deck where we got everything ready on the deck for sailing, for example the sails and the sheets. Sailing was a very good experience we practiced tacking multiple times and we also learnt how to use the winch during the tacks.

Finally, we had dinner which was a group effort to make spaghetti Bolognese. It was very good and now everyone has showered and chilled out.

Looking forwards to day 2 – which can on a good day be quite a scenic route due to the mountains and hills and we may even get to see some wildlife which would be very interesting. Similarly today we saw a seal which was quite close to the boat so that was very interesting.

We sailed past a cruise ship. I had a nice time steering as I stayed in the right lines.

Day 2

Wednesday, 30 July

Today we woke up at 7am, made scrambled eggs for breakfast.

We then prepped the boat to sail for the day, this included taking sail covers off and untying the lines to leave the dock for 9am. We then put all three sails up.

For lunch we had chicken wraps and salad. Then we messed about putting sails up and down.

We had to hold on tight when the boat heeled over and some clipped on to feel safe. It was fun and amazing how fast we were going without the engine on.
We also had an amazing sing song with the speaker.

We arrived at Tarbet and docked the boat. While starboard watch tidied up the deck, port watch cooked a lovely dinner. We had fajitas for dinner, then had showers and we wandered around the town for a bit. In total, we sailed the distance of 42.4 miles today. 😊

Day 3

Thursday, 31 July

We started the day by getting ready to leave Tarbert and went to the Co-Op one last time – to get supplies to last us for the night as we were to anchor at Holy Island.

We left Tarbert with strong winds and was able to power the boat the majority of the day with just the sails!

Just then, we saw porpoises in the water and Tom’s hat blew off in the wind and got taken by one of them.

We then ended up sailing with the wind behind us for most of the journey on a broad reach point of the sail so it was a fairly calm journey for the most of it. As we began to run out of things to do Ian (our Skipper) decided to entertain us by doing some dancing to very interesting music to say the least; at some point we also ended up playing remixes of Beethoven’s symphonies after multiple adamant requests for the composer’s pieces.

After taking down all the sails and anchoring in the harbour, we settled to down to have a Thai chicken curry which was very nice (after a very stressed cooking process) and now after everyone has completed their jobs everyone is ready to relax for the rest of the evening and there will most likely be more tea made.

This day has gone quite well and has been a very fun day for everyone.

Day 4

Cooking was amazing – it was Billy and Reuben cooking, and it was heavenly. Sailing was great; we had all three sails up, and the boat was tilting loads – way more fun than being flat on the water, because there are people sliding about the boat and you can stand sideways!

It was quite cold today – we had to put on some more layers at one point because of the wind chill. When we were coming back from Rhu, we saw a navy ship and police boats. We saw multiple hills, mountains, etc.

We also did man overboard drills, which were good, and Ashley was dangled over the side of the boat and had to pick up a buoy that we used for the drills.

Overall, it was a very good day.
