Voyage highlights

Sail across the English Channel — the world’s busiest shipping area
Build sea-miles and achieve your RYA Competent Crew certificate
Explore the beautiful architecture and history of the old walled city of St. Malo
No sailing experience necessary

Join us on this 10-day voyage from Portsmouth to St. Malo and back. Meet like-minded individuals – aged from 16 to 25 and learn new skills, gain increased confidence and create lifelong memories.

No prior sailing experience is required, but this summertime sailing adventure is a step up from our five-day South Coast residentials. This voyage is ideal for those who have already experienced a South Coast voyage and are now looking to widen their experience.

You can also gain your RYA Competent Crew certificate and tick off the residential section of your Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award.

Places you'll visit

The beginning or end of your voyage may include stopovers along the South Coast such as Cowes, Yarmouth, Poole, Weymouth, or even Brixham.  On the other side of the Channel, you might stop at Cherbourg, Alderney or Guernsey as well as St. Malo.

On arrival in St. Malo you’ll have the opportunity to explore the glorious walled historic French port with its narrow cobbled streets and selection of small shops, cafés, restaurants and importantly, ice cream parlours!

The tidal range in St. Malo can be more than 12 metres and at low tide tourists take advantage of its wide expanse of beach to appreciate the beautiful architecture on one side and the glorious sea on the other.

Takeaways from your sailing adventure

New skills. Increased confidence. New friendships. Memories.

Throughout the week, you’ll experience steering a yachtnight sailing, sail handling, ropework as well as learning how to keep safe onboard.

We divide the crew into two teams (watches), traditionally known as Port and Starboard. In your watches, you’ll take it in turns to be involved in all aspects of sailing the Challenger from looking after her to cooking and cleaning.

You’ll also experience offshore sailing (out of sight of land). This voyage is a great opportunity to escape from it all, build your confidence and widen your sailing experience.

RYA

You’ll hopefully get the chance to complete the RYA Competent Crew course while you’re onboard.

The cost of your RYA Competent Crew certificate is included in the price.

RYA logbooks are available for purchase onboard at a cost of £6 (Skippers are only able to take cash for this).

Duke of Edinburgh

All our voyages of four nights or more qualify for the residential section of the DofE Gold Award. Please let our Reservations Team know before sailing if you want to use the voyage for this.

Further information

The Skipper will determine the final route depending on weather and other variables.

There’s a possibility you could be recommended by the Skipper to come back and volunteer as a Watch Assistant or Watch Leader for future Tall Ships Youth Trust voyages.

Meals onboard are included.

Passport

You’ll need to present a valid passport at the start of the voyage.
