Build confidence in making smart decisions to stay safe when the sea gets rough

Are you ready for your next sailing challenge?

This three-day course is a hands-on challenge that will teach you how to stay safe and make smart decisions when the sea gets rough.

It is aimed at sailors who want to develop their understanding of heavy weather and the techniques to prepare for, avoid and sail in these conditions. We pack a lot into this course to ensure you’re fully equipped with the necessary skills and training.

We can’t guarantee heavy weather, but we can guarantee a good balance of theory and practical training while sailing onboard one of our 72ft Challenger yachts, which were designed and built for these conditions.

It offers more than just sailing — it’s about keeping calm, solving problems, and stepping up when it matters. These are the kind of life skills you’ll carry with you long after the voyage is over.

What You’ll Cover
  • Weather: forecasting, access and strategy management
  • Boat preparation: design, stability, safety, equipment and maintenance
  • Crew preparation: management, personal equipment, physical and mental preparations
  • Heavy weather sailing techniques
  • Scenario-based handling using real-life case studies

Proceeds from our adult voyages help fund our vital youth development work, focused on helping all young people to fulfil their true potential through life-changing adventures at sea, no matter what barriers they may face.

Further information

The Skipper will determine the final route depending on weather and other variables.   All meals on board are included.

Your Skipper can also recommend you for our volunteer crew training programme, if they feel you have the skills and attributes that we’re looking for. You can speak to your TSYT crew if this is something you’d be interested in and you’d like to find out more.
