Voyage highlights
Experience half-term like never before by joining the Tall Ships Youth Trust for an exhilarating voyage along the south coast.
Spend five incredible days on one of our renowned 72ft Challenger yachts. You’ll learn essential sailing skills and experience a taste of what life on the ocean is really like.
No prior sailing experience is needed for this ‘Voyage of Exploration.’ It’s the perfect introduction to sailing—just bring your enthusiasm, sense of adventure, and a willingness to learn!
Our voyages are a great way to build up your confidence and self-esteem, as well as creating new, lasting friendships, exploring the ocean environment and developing social and communication skills.
On this voyage, you will also work towards achieving your RYA Start Yachting qualification: the first step on your sailing qualifications journey. You can also use this voyage to complete the residential section of your Duke of Edinburgh’s Gold Award if this applies to you
You’ll sail through the Solent, before exploring the stunning south coast. You may spot dolphins, seals and fin whales along the way, so don’t forget your camera!
Likely stopovers include Cowes, Poole and Weymouth.
New skills. Increased confidence. New friendships. Lasting memories.
Over the course of your voyage, you’ll learn about and practice sailing essentials including steering the yacht as well as sail handling, ropework and how to keep safe on board. If conditions are suitable, you may also get to do some night sailing.
We divide the crew into two teams (watches) – traditionally, known as Port and Starboard. In your watches, you’ll take it in turns to be involved in all aspects of sailing the Challenger – from deck duties to cooking and cleaning.
Each crew member will receive a personal assessment covering their leadership, teamwork and communication skills – a great addition to your CV.
You’ll hopefully get the chance to complete the RYA Start Yachting course while you’re on board.
The RYA Start Yachting syllabus includes:
- Sea terms and parts of a boat, rigging and sails
- Sail handling
- Ropework
- Personal safety equipment
- Man overboard recovery
- Clothing and emergency equipment
- Rules of the ‘road’ (at sea)
The cost of your RYA Start Yachting certificate is included in the price.
RYA logbooks are available for purchase onboard at a cost of £6 (Skippers are only able to take cash for this).
All voyages of four nights or more qualify for residential section of the DofE Gold Award.
Please let our Reservations Team know before sailing if you want to use the voyage for this.
The Skipper will determine the final route depending on weather and other variables.
There’s a possibility you could be recommended by the Skipper to come back and volunteer as a Trainee Watch Leader for future Tall Ships Youth Trust voyages.
Meals on board are included.
We believe everyone should have the chance to experience a life-changing voyage and realise their potential.
Bursaries Available: If you’re a parent facing financial constraints or a young person who has faced, or is facing, personal challenges (this could be a learning disability, you are a young carer or are not currently in education) we have funding available to support you.
