Ever wondered what it’s like to live and work at sea for a night?

Our Big Boat taster voyage gives 16–25-year-olds the chance to step on board a big yacht and take part in an adventure they’ll never forget – all in a safe and fully supported environment.

Whether you’re a total beginner, a dinghy sailor looking to go bigger, or someone who just loves the outdoors, this is your chance to experience life on a large vessel and get hands-on with sailing in a real team setting.

This isn’t just a sailing trip away from familiar grounds; it’s an opportunity to make new friends, develop teamwork and communication skills, and take on challenges in an ocean-based youth development setting. By the end of the voyage, young people will have new skills, lasting memories, and stories to share.

For those interested in taking their experience further, this Taster Voyage offers a steppingstone into TSYT’s three-voyage programme of Exploration, Empowerment, and Leadership, designed to help young people develop essential life skills such as confidence, teamwork, independence and resilience, while receiving guidance and support on their journey toward adulthood.

Places you’ll visit

You’ll sail along the Bristol Channel, enjoying the stunning coastline. Keep your camera handy.

Likely stopovers include Cardiff Bay and Portishead.

.

Takeaways from your sailing adventure

Increased confidence and self-esteem. New friendships. New skills.

Throughout the voyage, you’ll experience steering a yacht, sail handling, ropework as well as learning how to keep safe onboard.  If conditions permit, you’ll also get to do some night sailing too

We divide the crew into two teams (watches) – traditionally, known as Port and Starboard. In your watches, you’ll take turns to be involved in all aspects of sailing the Challenger from deck duties and maintenance to cooking and cleaning.

Each crew member will receive a personal assessment covering their teamwork and communication skills.

Further information

The Skipper will determine the final route depending on the weather and other variables.

There’s a possibility you could be recommended by the Skipper to come back and volunteer as a Trainee Watch Leader for future Tall Ships Youth Trust voyages.

All meals on board are included.
