First Mate

Offshore crew

Please tell us a bit about yourself

I’m a secondary school music teacher living and working in Cornwall. I first sailed with TSYT as a teacher on a school trip and enjoyed it so much that I came back as a volunteer. In my spare time I enjoy long distance cycling, surfing and sailing my own boat, a 1937 Hillyard 4 tonner.

Please tell us a bit about your role at Tall Ships Youth Trust

I’m a first mate at tall ships youth trust. This involves assisting the skipper with sailing the boat, looking after the watch leaders and voyage crew and doing anything else that’s required really. I enjoy cooking so can often be found helping out in the galley and once managed to bake cinnamon buns at sea!

What has been your most memorable moment at Tall Ships Youth Trust?

Probably crossing the Atlantic as a watch leader in 2019. This was a long held dream of mine and it was a beautiful experience with so many gorgeous sunsets and sunrises.

What is one thing you think people should know about Tall Ships Youth Trust?

The work they do is truly transformative. Every young person that I’ve sailed with has accomplished something remarkable on their voyage, whether it’s climbing the mast, sailing the boat in all conditions, navigating through the night along coast or helping to feed a hungry crew.

Please describe your job in three words

Fun, adventurous, exciting!

If you were famous, what would you be famous for?

I’d be a jazz musician!
