James Atwell

Mate and Fleet Bosun

Offshore crew, Onshore crew

Please tell us a bit about yourself

I’m a Mate here at TSYT and one of three Fleet Bosuns.

I’ve been sailing since 2018, originally as a young person on a voyage, and have been involved in sail training ever since.

Please tell us a bit about your role at Tall Ships Youth Trust

As a Mate I’m responsible for teaching young people how to do everything on board. From how to put sails up and down, to carrying out regular engine checks!

As Bosun, I help maintain our fleet. Every day is different but most days I can be found servicing one of the engines or crawling around in the bilge!

What has been your most memorable moment at Tall Ships Youth Trust?

One of my favourite memories at TSYT is soaring up the Irish Sea with a group of Trainee Watch Leaders.

What is one thing you think people should know about Tall Ships Youth Trust?

What we do at TSYT is like nothing else, the impact our voyages have on young people’s lives is truly limitless.

Please describe your job in three words

Varied

Exciting

Rewarding

If you were famous, what would you be famous for?

I think being famous for sailing round the world would be amazing!! Our Challengers already are!
