Please tell us a bit about yourself
I’m 29 and from the Isle of Wight. I’m a freelance cruising instructor, teaching young people from the age of 12 on leisure trips, right up to teaching adults on racing yachts around the world.
My first job was as a climbing instructor at the age of 14. I then spent 10 years working for the NHS, and still do sometimes, alongside completing a degree in medical science
Please tell us a bit about your role at Tall Ships Youth Trust
I started working freelance for the Trust in 2018 as a Mate and have since progressed to Skipper, after being signed off in 2023.
I throrougly enjoy the challenge of the role, as well as contributing to maintenance and engineering on the fleet.
What has been your most memorable moment at Tall Ships Youth Trust?
I will always remember one young person who came from a very difficult background. He came to join us for a week at sea and on the last evening he was helping me prep dinner.
He turned to me and said. “before this voyage, my life was pretty rubbish, but this week has made me realise there are lots of options out there and it doesn’t have to be this way”.
What is one thing you think people should know about Tall Ships Youth Trust?
We work hard to help young people to develop and strive to achieve their goals.
