Start Sailing Belfast
We had 7 young people between the age of 12 to 15 join us on Challenger 2 for a two night voyage.
Follow them on our daily blog!
Day 1
Thursday 3rd July
Today we sailed to the Bangor marine and were taught how to do tack, which is where one widget you crank and the other one parallel of the other widget you leave one bit of the rope on and let it go.
We were also taught how to tie a bowline knot which though fun was quite difficult to learn. As well as this we were taught to sweat the mast which is how you raise the main sail on the boat.
Some of us had the chance to climb up the mast and others got the chance to steer the boat from the helm. We also learnt all about the life jacket and all their key features and then we practised a man overboard drill which was quite fun. After this we arrived at Bangor, docked, but the boat to bed and then had dinner.
After that we talked about the day then washed up showered, relaxed and went to bed.
Day 2
Friday 4th July
We woke up early and had breakfast of cereal and toast for some. We did some cleaning and tidying.
Then we got ready to go out in the rain to do some MOB drills. First, we rescued a conscious casualty using the helicopter sling, it was really fun and interesting. I did the rescuing and saved Lauren.
We then use the Dorito (Mobi sling) – I just observed but it was to practice rescuing an unconscious person. It was funny, but not so fun to do.
We then climbed out of the boat on the spinnaker pole; it was scary to put trust in the others to not drop us! But it was really fun and I was glad I tried it even though I didn’t want to start.
Then we came in and started baking. While we waited for the cakes to bake, we went for showers. Then we took the cakes out and decorated them – the results were unique and showed the character of the crew. They tasted good and my watch won because you have to fold the flour in properly rather than just mixing.
Terry told us what was going to happen tomorrow – it was nice because we know what’s going to happen and ask questions in advance.
