Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) Exploration Voyage

By Bolade - June 27th, 2025 | Posted in Voyager blogs No comments

Talk about excitement!!

Ten (very) excited young people aged 15–17 joined us on Challenger 2, currently in Northern Ireland, as part of our work to expand our reach across the UK and connect more young people with life-changing experiences.

This four-night exploration voyage took place in Belfast, where the young people documented their experiences.

Read on to learn how they found the voyage.

Day 1

Monday, 23 June

We left the house a lot  earlier and during that time,  I thought then it hit me that the trip is finally a reality.

If I want to be really honest, I was more excited than actually nervous, thought some things were really bothering me but with the help of my lovely mother and her kind and encouraging words. My mind was quickly to ease.

The crew was very welcoming and homely; it was then I realized I was going to have to make this the best experience of my life.

The cabins were surprisingly spacious ( Thank GOD ) at least my sleep bag is comfortable. hahaha

Anyway, moving on to the main things we learned today ( it was a lot) – We learned a series of things including:

MOB ( Man overboard), how to put sails up and down and tighten a winch, we learned how to steer the boat which was something that I was wanting to do for a long time.

We also had sometimes to sit, relax and enjoy the scenery which was a good time for me to meditate about a few things.

Overall, I am very thankful for having the opportunity to do this and I am really looking forward to day 2.

When I had left my house I was feeling nervous on the way. When I had arrived at the police station (starting point), I felt reassured because I knew that my friends had been feeling the same way, when we arrived I had to lift my heavy bag from the bus to the boat and the crew had said that it was reasonably heavy (as a joke).

When we got a tour of the boat I was feeling a bit more comfortable with my way around the boat.

When we had left the dock I was scared of the boat but then I got the feeling of the boat and was okay, when we were being taught in the snakes pit I didn’t know how fast I could learn how to use the winch and put the sails up and down (surprised me) so excited for the next day to come.

Day 2

Tuesday, 24 June

On day 2, we woke up early at around 7am, anchorage outside Larne called Browns Bay.

We put up the main sail and everyone had to work as a team to get the main sail up, we did a tug of war with the sail as it was heavy and it turned out successful.

On our way to Tarbert, while sailing, the boat was slanted and it was an exciting experience; we had to cook lunch while the boat was slanted so it was tricky challenge but that made it great fun.

When we arrived, we finally got to have refreshing warm showers, we went on a walk to a pebbly beach and also went to the shop to get some tasty snacks.

We enjoyed Scotland a lot and we even made our own joke “ts so tuff in Scotland” which basically means that Scotland is cool.

After dinner we played boardgames and cards and it was an amazing day.

On the second day, we woke up around 7am to have cereal before started our longest day of sailing.

We started by putting up the sails including the main sail which was our first time putting it up. After we got the sails up we played a few games below deck before making lunch.

At lunch the boat was tilted almost 45 degrees while my group was cooking the sausage which was definitely a challenge for us to overcome.

After a long day of sailing we docked at Tarbert in Scotland and got to have a few look at the shops. We finished the day with a quick walk to the beach then back to the boat for bed.
