New Years Youth Adventure with TSYT -CF815

By Panajota - January 5th, 2026 | Posted in Voyager blogs No comments

Seven young people aged 16–25 joined us on Challenger 4 for a four-day New Year’s Youth Adventure along the South Coast.

From 29 December to 2 January, the group fully immersed themselves in life on board learning to sail, taking on shared responsibilities, and discovering the importance of real teamwork. As the year turned, they challenged themselves, grew in confidence, developed new skills, and formed strong connections with one another.

Welcoming the New Year at sea made the experience especially memorable, combining excitement, reflection and a real sense of achievement.

Read on to hear about their adventure, in their own words!

Day 1

29 Dec 2025

As a first-time sailor, it’s been an interesting new experience. Despite a lack of cheese, I have thoroughly enjoyed the lessons I’ve learnt today. I’m currently enjoying my time socially, with a mix of first time and experienced sailors, as well as a mix of personalities.  I’m looking forward to seeing how the week goes, as I gain more experience and confidence within the sailing world. -E

After having a tour of the vessel, we got dressed in our waterproof’s and set off from Portsmouth towards our destination of Cowes. Making our way out from harbour using the engine, about 20 minutes into our adventure we set the sails up and let the wind carry us to the next port. -C

Despite what the rumours told, sailing in the winter was not as cold as I expected. After sailing to Cowes, the sails were lowered and we explored the galley.  A key factor in the exploration of the ship, was the shock of the beds being so comfy and warm to me. Being on the top bunk was definitely the best choice. -J

P.S. They used a block and a half of cheese in the 6 hours they have been on board. B – (Watch Leader)

Day 3

31 Dec 2025

Today, we embarked on a trying journey, with trials and tribulations throughout the mysterious fog. We started our journey in Poole bright and early at 7, with a fulfilling breakfast which consisted of bacon sandwiches and hot drinks. However, there was a delay due to a dash of frost lining the deck making the conditions to prep the boat undesirable.

We finally departed at 10:30 meaning our short delay was not so short but gave us lots of learning and leisure time. With a lack of wind, sailing was challenging and led to no sails being hoisted, but Sean taught us some cool knots.

At high noon (12.20), we were engulfed with a thick fog encapsulating the boat, making it Pirates of the Caribbean-Esque. The fog was accompanied by a chilling wind, leading to frost on all our hats which added quite an aesthetic. Around 2pm, we had no visibility (20m) it was hard times, yet we persevered as a united force with a multitude of hot drinks especially Galaxy hot chocolate.

At 1500 hours, we had a calm wind force with 50m of visibility, and a short 30 min later we arrived in West Cowes, following the blaring and quite tedious sound of the red-funnel-ferry. We put the boat to rest by putting it in its PJ (sail covers) and explored the town of Cowes. It was lovely and was followed by a kebab which was obviously Clay’s.

After a long day at sea, we came to rest with green watch cooking a fantastic curry (as we are the best after all). Esme is baking up a storm with some classy brownies. We are planning on watching the fireworks ashore, let’s hope we can find some!!!

Happy New Year from E, C, J and Ben obvi.

Day 4

1st Jan 2026

Challenger 3 enjoyed a wonderful New Year’s Eve fireworks display over the Solent, particularly impressive over Southampton. The following day we had a slightly later start, including lovely scrambled eggs on toast for breakfast made by red watch.

We sailed out of Cowes to do some training up wind. We were beating, heeling over hard with all the sails up. Our crew worked cohesively and efficiently, making our tacks and gybes smooth.

After tiring some of us out, a wonderful nap was enjoyed by a large majority of the crew, with the downwind sailing being warmer and the sun in its full glory. We learnt some technical skills with man overboard, and you’ll relieved to know that our ‘casualty’ was recovered unharmed, and safely stowed away in the sail locker.

We arrived in Portsmouth in good time, with a scrumptious risotto as a reward, sharing trip highlights and a common bond over dinner.

This week has created memories that will last a lifetime, and passion to fuel our future adventures; with many of the crew already planning their next voyage with Tall Ships!!!!!!!!
