London Academy of Excellence – XF250925A Challenger 3

By Panajota - September 29th, 2025 | Posted in Voyager blogs No comments

We are joined by 20 remarkable young people, aged 16 to 18, from the London Academy of Excellence for a four-day voyage on board both Challenger 2 and Challenger 3. This experience has encouraged them to step outside their comfort zones, strengthen their communication skills, and grow in confidence, a journey full of challenge, teamwork, and discovery.

You can read more about the adventures of those sailing on Challenger 3 in this blog posts.

Day 1

After a long journey (about 2hrs) from London, we were met by our crew at the station and we walked through the beautiful marina and saw some awesome buildings. We were then introduced to the sailing crew who were very friendly and welcoming.

After dropping off our stuff, we sat in the nice and comfy lounge room, and we ate our first dinner of the week which was fajitas, the food was brilliant, and it was more than enough.

Then we got split up into watches, and one went on dish duty whilst the other toured the boat.

We ended the day exploring  Portsmouth marina and getting to know all the other crew members. We were all extremely drained from the travel from London and lights were off by 10:30.

Day 2

Started the day off with a refreshing early morning shower after an energy boosting breakfast. FINALLY set off to sail after a long preparation session of the boat which lasted 2 hours. Some of the new terms we learnt were: parts of the boat e.g. Bow, Sheets, Halliards, Winches, Knots, SOG, Yankee, Mast and some extra stuff (tomorrow well remember).

Sailed from Portsmouth all the way to Yarmouth near the Isle of Wight and through that journey we practiced a man overboard procedure where we lowered Michael Phelps into the water to save our BOYs(Bouys).

On the open water we practiced tacks

In the evening watch starboard watch cooked a lovely meal where everyone filled their stomachs, after a wandering around and a hard days work

Main mission tomorrow is to

  • Beat the girls in climbing the mast
  • Lift the main sail in the shortest time
  • To do a perfect tacks
