Ketch – ASTO Small Ships Race – XK241004
HTP Apprenticeship College join us for the ASTO Small Ships Race. Follow their journey below.
Day 1
Friday, 4 October
We got picked up from the college at around 9:30, arrived at the marina for 9:55. We met up with the first mate and skipper – and went to the boat. We all settled down for a bit in the saloon before deciding where we were all going to sleep, and then we listened to Giles give us a safety briefing before learning about the different lines and sails of the boat.
We had lunch at 12:30 and then prepared the boat to go for a quick sail around, then sailed for a few hours. I (Mai) was very happy to move the big stick (tiller) :3. Mikey liked tacking and being pretentious. Jayden just enjoyed being on the water. Which makes sense because the water is beautiful, huge waves and when your there you get the overwhelming feeling that you’re at mercy of the water. Its rather fun 😀
I hope that tomorrow during the race we see quite a few creatures, which would be nice. J
We learnt about how to tie the rope so that they wouldn’t tangle, and we also learnt how to tie the fenders onto the side of the boat to protect it from the pontoon. We used a clove hitch for that. J
Each one of us tried steering with the emergency tiller, known as tacking, which moves the boat in the opposite direction to which you push it. You get the hang of it pretty quickly. We also had a life jacket safety briefing and adjusted our life jackets to fit us over the weekend. In the evening my group cooked food, and by my group I mean they chopped stuff and I cooked everything. Im not complaining, I do really love cooking. We all ate it and talked around the table and it reminded me of how some familys have dinners together. (I mean that in the most melancholic way possible)
After dinner, my group is writing this blog while the other group is washing the dishes from the day. We are probably going to go to a shop before settling into bed for the night. Goodnight J
Day 2
Saturday, 6 October
We did the race we competed against many people we had to work as a team to tack and we each had a go at steering the boat. I found the waves very relaxing I could fall asleep listening to the waves. We saw many other competitors and we waved at them as they waved at us one boat we did the YMCA. Once we finished the race we docked back up and started cooking dinner we had fajitas it was the first time I ever had them and they were delicious. We went to the award ceremony and we came second in our class and 8th overall after all the awards were given there was a disco with a DJ it was epic then we came back to the boat and went to sleep have had the best weekend ever.
