Ten cadets aged 14–17 from Humberside & South Yorkshire Army Cadet Force set sail from Greenock for a week of challenge, teamwork, and personal growth at sea. A unique adventure powered by wind, grit, and camaraderie.

Day 1

Today we arrived at Challenger 2 at around 12pm, we were met by the staff who were very welcoming and showed us where to put our stuff,  and then gave us a tour around the interior, where we saw our bunks, toilets and dining area and exterior of the boat learning the basic before moving on to the more senior things.

Originally, we had some trouble leaving port due to the wind but after three long attempts we managed.

Today we took turns doing different jobs and duty such as driving and putting up sails etc. today my team had the chore of cooking for rest of the crew, we made spag boll, while the other team cleaned up on the deck.

We  learnt some important information such as port meaning left and starboard which is right, we also learnt different knots such as the bowline and clove  hitch. We where showed how to steer and put up and down the sails.

Overall the day was challenging but showed promise for the rest of the days that we will spend on the boat because as we spend more time on deck the more time we can get used to different commands and jobs becoming more efficient.

Day 3

Right so today starboard watch was on breakfast getting the scran ready for everyone and making everyone tea and coffee and or drink whoever wanted it.

Later on, on the deck we got the boat ready to set off and then we left Tarbet which is the port we were staying in the previous night.

Also spotted dolphins in the water while sailing and a jelly fish. We are now stationed at lochranza after we anchored down and pumped up the dingy and put away the sails , we went to the shore on the dingy in groups of 5 then went to lochranza castle and had a walk around the village then went back to the boat to cook tea which was chilli con carne then that’s it.

The game re started.

JAX AND GEORGE PETTIGREW .

Day 4

Today was quite the site seeing trip involving various methods of transport by the military.

However, first of all, everyone woke up, we had bacon sandwiches for breakfast . Unexpectedly, we were endorsed with the opportunity to climb the mast of our sailboat – Exciting!

In sync we all put a team of sweaters to pull each person up the mast 1 by one. This eventually got tedious as the overload of everyone’s weight built up. Later on, we continued with other activities – mainly feigned ‘man overboard’ drills.

Eventually, we had came across a behemoth ship spanning across the horizon. This was a Navy ship. As if in unison, came a military transport plain looming its wings over our heads as it came close.

It was quite the airshow around Millport. The most intriguing thing was the Agamemnon Submarine which had passed us near the coast, escorted by police boats.

Surprisingly, it is a state-of-the-art hunter killer sub powered by nuclear energy.

To wind down, we competed for the fastest team to raise the sail up the mast.
