CH1 – Jack Hunt School – XF240930
Jack Hunt School join us for a 4-night voyage. They are one of eight schools from Peterborough sponsored by Cross Keys Homes this year. Follow their journey below.
Day 1
Monday, 30 September
For some the start of the day was full of nerves and worries before boarding the boat however once we all arrived, we were given the reassurance of how safe we would all be and how much fun we were about to have. For most it was a new experience that is going to be full of new challenges and facing some of our fears. Once having our tours of the boat and all gaining a clear understanding of how everything worked, we did a practice man overboard test where two students were led by the crew and all of the students on what to do and how to do it safely. Although we were still on land it was quite scary. After that, in our small groups we did the staysail hoisting challenge which involved hard teamwork and strength. The challenge was successful as everyone got involved and we all learned the importance of teamwork when working a boat. Once these activities were over, one group cooked spaghetti bolognaise for dinner while the other group washed up. Now that day one is almost over we are relaxing as a group, excited for the days ahead.
Day 2
Tuesday, 1 October
Waking up bright and early, the crew got prepared for the day with a hearty breakfast (Breakfast baps) and began setting up the ship for its first voyage to the Isle of Wight. We all worked hard to get the ship in proper order fast and efficiently by hoisting the sails and pulling up the buoys before embarking. The seas were extremely beautiful, crashing against our ship and sending a few of us stumbling a few times. Though it had only been a day, it was clear our crew’s communication and teamwork was developing as we had done our jobs much faster than before by relying on each other’s strengths and pull our weight. Not everyone was so lucky to have smooth sailing however, as many felt seasick and had to take moments to relax whilst others helped the best they could on the ship. We soon docked on the Isle of Wight where we will be spending our night together. Dinner of chicken curry was enjoyed by all, cooked by the group. We are now taking time to relax after a hard day of work on the ship, as our team becomes stronger and more bonded everyday.
Day 3
Wednesday, 2 October
Waking up bright and early again, the crew quickly got organised with a simple yet homely breakfast (cereal and toast). After breakfast, it didn’t take long for the teams to switch and begin their duties. Ones team washed and cleaned up after breakfast whilst the other began setting up the ship for the next part of the voyage. Today our destination was Poole, so we quickly set up the ships by rearranging ropes and unpacking sails and doing things of similar nature. Today’s journey was longer but much smoother and less people felt seasick. This meant that more people were able to give their all which helped to make the trip a more pleasant experience. After having lunch whilst sailing, we were taught how to tie multiple knots and when, and where, we would use them. Eventually, we arrived at our destination and began packing up the ship. Once this was complete, the team headed out on a short walk around the local area and shortly headed back to get started on making sausages and mash for dinner. We are now taking time to rest after such a tiresome yet very successful day and may sit up in the cockpit or play games down in the lounge area. Regardless of what we choose to do, our day has been wonderful and filled with tonnes of opportunities for memories.
