Experience half-term like never before by joining the Tall Ships Youth Trust for an exhilarating voyage along the south coast.

Spend five incredible days on one of our renowned 72ft Challenger yachts. You’ll learn essential sailing skills and experience a taste of what life on the ocean is really like.

To join a TSYT ‘Voyage of Exploration’ require little to no prior sailing experience as this is the first stage of our three-voyage journey of Exploration, Empowerment and Leadership.

Throughout the adventure, you’ll have the opportunity to learn new skills while developing your confidence and self-esteem and building your social and communication skills.

Achieve your RYA Start Yachting certificate, the first step on your RYA yachting qualifications journey.

Places you’ll visit 

You’ll sail into the Solent from Gunwharf Quays in Portsmouth, before exploring the stunning south coast. You may spot dolphins along the way! Likely stopovers includeCowes, YarmouthandWeymouth.

Takeaways from your sailing adventure 

New skills. Increased confidence. New friendships. Lasting memories. 

Over the course of your voyage, you’ll learn about and practice sailing essentials includingsteering the yacht as well as sail handling, ropework and how to keep safe on board.If conditions are suitable, you may also get to do somenight sailing.  

We divide the crew into two teams (watches) – traditionally, known as Port and Starboard. In your watches, you’ll take it in turns to be involved in all aspects of sailing the Challenger – from deck duties tocookingandcleaning. 

Each crew member will receive apersonal assessmentcovering theirleadership,teamworkandcommunicationskills – a great addition to your CV.  

RYA 

You’ll hopefully get the chance to complete the RYA Start Yachting course while you’re on board.  

 The RYA Start Yachting syllabus includes: 

  • Sea terms and parts of a boat, rigging and sails 
  • Sail handling 
  • Ropework 
  • Personal safety equipment 
  • Man overboard recovery 
  • Clothing and emergency equipment
  • Rules of the ‘road’ (at sea) 

The cost of your RYA Start Yachting certificate is included in the price. RYA logbooks are available for purchase onboard at a cost of £6 (Skippers are only able to take cash for this). 

Further information 

The Skipper will determine the final route depending on weather and other variables. 

There’s a possibility you could be recommended by the Skipper to come back and volunteer as a Training Watch Leader for future Tall Ships Youth Trust voyages. If you’re interested in pursuing this opportunity, you can speak to your skipper when you join the vessel!
