Join TSYT for a voyage of self-discovery exploring ports along the south coast
Immerse yourself in the thrills and challenges of ocean sailing
Achieve your RYA Start Yachting certificate
Form new friendships and develop life skills
Develop your confidence and self-esteem while having fun!

Spend a week at sea with an experience like no other! This week-long, immersive sailing adventure is the perfect opportunity for you to build your confidence, resilience and life skills, while making new friends and discovering the stunning ocean environment.

As a TSYT ‘Voyage of Exploration’ on board our 55ft ketch vessel, Tenacity of Bolton, you do not require any prior sailing experience to take part. A Voyage of Exploration is the first stage of TSYT’s recently launched three-voyage journey of Exploration, Empowerment and Leadership, and encourages young people to embrace new experiences, explore the ocean environment and build an awareness of their surroundings.

Sailing from Weymouth to the boat’s home port of Portsmouth, you’ll have the opportunity to develop your confidence and self-esteem, while increasing your social and communication skills by living and working on board, together with your crew mates.

You can also use the voyage to achieve your RYA Start Yachting certificate: the first step on your sailing qualifications journey.

Places you’ll visit

After setting sail from Weymouth, you’ll sail along part of the stunning Jurassic Coast, with likely stopovers in Poole and Lymington.

You’ll then sail through the Solent, the world’s most famous sailing waters, and have the opportunity to stop over in Yarmouth or Cowes on the Isle of Wight, before you disembark the boat in the historic waterfront city of Portsmouth.

Be sure to pack your camera as you may spot dolphins, seals and fin whales along your journey.

Takeaways from your Voyage of Exploration

New skills. Increased confidence. Self-esteem. New friendships.

Throughout the week, you’ll experience steering a yacht, sail handling, ropework as well as learning how to keep safe on board.  If conditions permit, you’ll also get to experience some night sailing.

We divide the crew into two teams (watches) – traditionally, known as Port and Starboard. In your watches, you’ll take it in turns to be involved in all aspects of sailing – from deck duties and maintenance to cooking and cleaning.

Each crew member will have a debrief and receive a personal assessment covering their leadership, teamwork and communication skills at the end of the voyage.

Further information

The Skipper will determine the final route depending on weather and other variables.

Your Skipper can also recommend you for our volunteer crew training programme, if they feel you have the skills and attributes that we’re looking for. You can speak to your TSYT crew if this is something you’d be interested in and you’d like to find out more.

All meals on board are included.

RYA

You’ll hopefully get the chance to complete the RYA Start Yachting course while you’re on board.

The RYA Start Yachting syllabus includes:

  • Sea terms and parts of a boat, rigging and sails
  • Sail handling
  • Ropework
  • Personal safety equipment
  • Man overboard recovery
  • Clothing and emergency equipment
  • Rules of the ‘road’ (at sea)

The cost of your RYA Start Yachting certificate is included in the price.

RYA logbooks are available for purchase on board at a cost of £6 (Skippers are only able to take cash for this).
