Onboard Challenger 1 this week, we have a group of students from Will Adams School, joining us for a four-night voyage from Portsmouth to Gravesend.

When we first got on the boat, we were curious but cautious. After the safety briefing we were ready for the journey. When we heard that we were sailing for 18 hours straight on the first night, we were shocked but ready for the challenge.

On the first night we went to bed early and the rocking waves put us to sleep. Waking up in Dover the next morning was startling but refreshing, as we got out of bed and climbed up to the deck, we were amazed by the sight of France over the channel and Dover castle on the chalk cliffs above.

Being responsible for cooking and catering for others for breakfast, lunch and dinner has been a challenge and a privilege. This taught us to put others before ourselves when it is needed.

Steering the boat for the first time made us feel responsible and on top of the world, at first we had officials watching over our shoulder, but when we were left to steer it made us feel confident and trusted with others’ lives in our hands.

Adventuring in places around England was interesting and enjoyable. Wandering around unknown places took courage. Playing games below deck made us closer, which helped with our adventures.

Climbing the whopping 100ft tall mast was fun and breathtaking, and when we reached the top we were rewarded with a jaw dropping view.

Having the privilege of joining the Tall Ships Youth Trust voyage was fun, exhilarating and a great life lesson that we will never forget, and we thank the whole crew for it.
