Are there any extra costs?
Yes – Port and Fuel Surcharges.
Due to changes in port security legislation, certain ports and port agents have increased their charges to us substantially. Whilst we will try to negotiate these charges down, it may be necessary to pass on to our Voyage Crew a port surcharge to help us cover some of these extra costs. This surcharge will only be implemented if needed. The amount of the surcharge is stated when booking your voyage online through our website or is available by calling the Reservations Team on 02392 832055.
Although we operate sailing vessels and we will always maximise the amount of sailing on your voyage, we still have to operate our engines in order to run our vessels. Everything from meeting schedule dates, entering port, running auxiliary services onboard such as generators and water making plants need fuel. Unfortunately we are still seeing a dramatic increase in the cost of fuel. We hope that this may not be permanent and therefore rather than passing on this increase to the customer on your voyage fee we have decided to implement a surcharge to cover this increase. This means that it will only be implemented if our fuel costs do not go down. The amount of the surcharge is stated when booking your voyage online through our website or is available by calling the Reservations Team on 02392 832055.
Can I reserve a space?
To reserve a space on one of our voyages you will need to complete a booking form and pay the appropriate deposit.
Will everybody else on the voyage know each other?
No. The majority of people will not have met each other before unless they happen to have travelled to the vessel together.
Do I need any sailing experience?
No. You don’t need any experience or sailing qualifications. Full training will be given on board.
Have a look at the Voyage Grading guide to find out which voyage is most suitable for you.
How many crew do the Brig, Challenger Yachts and Tall Ships Cat take?
See our Crew pages to find out how many people each of the Vessels take to sea.
Where will I go on my voyage?
You will find the start and end ports in the programme, but it’s not possible to guarantee where you will go during the voyage as this is dependant on the weather and the Voyage Crew’s ability. Your Captain/Skipper will keep you up to date with where you are likely to travel during your voyage and we’ll always aim to get in as much sailing as possible. Some overnight voyages may plan to visit a foreign port too, so you’ll need your passport (see individual voyage information for whether you need a passport or not). Your joining and leaving ports will only change if absolutely necessary and you will be informed of any change as soon as possible.
Do I need a passport?
Check the voyage information listed under each voyage to find out whether you require a passport.
Where can I book flights? Are they included?
Flights are NOT included in the voyage price. Our recommended travel partner is STA Travel and we normally have a limited number of pre-booked spaces on certain flights. If you wish to find out more about flights please call or email our Reservations Team on 02392 832055 or firstname.lastname@example.org . It is recommended that you book these flights as soon as possible as places are limited.
The benefits are:
- Secured/preferential prices
- Flights are coordinated so you join and depart the vessel at the right time
- Early booking secures a guaranteed price
- Prevents last minute booking which can often mean higher flight prices
Flights for Youth Voyages include transfers to and from the vessel if booked through STA Travel.
Are flight transfers included?
Unless otherwise stated, prices exclude the cost of getting to and from the vessel (flight/ferry/train costs and transfers between the airport/ferry terminal/station and the ship). Information on how to get to the vessel and what time you should be onboard will be sent to you with your joining instructions.
Transfers for Youth Voyages abroad: Transfers between the local airport/ferry terminal/station and the vessel are normally included on youth voyages when flights/ferries are booked through STA Travel.

What do I need to take on my voyage?
Download our Crew Handbooks for a suggested kit list.
Do I need sailing boots? Where can I buy them from?
There is a chance that your feet will get wet whilst sailing so we recommend you bring a spare pair of trainers that you don’t mind getting wet. You can invest in a pair of special sailing boots but these can be expensive so we would only advise this if you are doing a long offshore passage or sailing during the winter months.
If you do wish to buy some sailing boots, try your local yacht chandlery or visit an online marine store.
Are there plug sockets on board for mobile/camera chargers?
Tall Ship – there are 240v three pin sockets in each watch cabin which are shared with other members of your watch.
Challenger Yachts & Catamaran– there are no sockets onboard that can be used for electrical equipment.
What time will I need to arrive on my first day?
You will be sent joining instructions approximately 8 weeks before your voyage with details of where your vessel will be berthed and at what time to arrive.
Do you have any salaried or volunteer crew vacancies?
Have a look at our Vacancies page to find out more.
How do I become a supporter of the Tall Ships Youth Trust?
Join our 1500 supporters – join online from just £5 a month.
Can I volunteer?
Volunteering for the Tall Ships Youth Trust can be a very rewarding experience; passing on your knowledge and skills to others, onboard any of our vessels. Find out more.
