Olympic Torch Relay 2012

Stavros Carries Olympic Torch…

Tall Ships Youth Trust is set to be part of the Olympic Torch Relay as it makes its way to Dover on 18th July 2012 on route to the Olympics.

We are very pleased and excited to announce that our 200ft Tall Ship ‘Stavros S Niarchos’ will be carrying the Olympic Flame into Dover Harbour. 28 young people from Kent and 12 young people from Pas de Calais all aged between 14-15 years old will join our crew on board.

Tim Law, Tall Ships Youth Trust Marketing and Operations Director, said: “We are incredibly proud to be a part of the Olympic Torch Relay and it is an honour to deliver the torch into Dover on our Magnificent Tall Ship”

The Olympic Flame is to be part of a Trust voyage, commissioned by Kent County Council in conjunction with Conseil Général du Pas-de-Calais, to locally deliver Lord Sebastian Coe’s promise that the London 2012 Games will inspire young people in the UK and abroad.

The voyage starts in Poole on 14th July and joining the Ship will be a young artist, Kiell Smith-Bynoe, who will be part of the voyage to help the young people on board play their own part in Song for Dover and a journalist will be on board to document the experiences and teach the young people the Olympic Ethos.

This voyage also stops over in Boulogne, France for an itinerary organised by Boulogne’s local Council to visit the Mobile Pompidou Centre.

An average of 115 Torchbearers a day will carry the Olympic Flame during its 8,000 mile journey around the UK before it arrives at the Olympic Stadium on 27 July 2012 for the lighting of the cauldron at the Opening Ceremony, signifying the official start of the London 2012 Olympic Games.

The Flame will travel around the UK by a variety of different methods of transport, including a cable car, hot air balloon, bicycle, motorbike, horseback and our very own Stavros S Niarchos.

The London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) have confirmed places for over 7,300 inspiring people who will be carrying the Olympic Flame as Torchbearers in the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay.
