The annual Round the Island Race is one of the largest yacht races in the world, regularly attracting over 1,400 boats and around 15,000 sailors. You will follow the route starting on the famous Royal Yacht Squadron line in Cowes, racing anticlockwise round the island to The Needles, round St Catherine’s Point and Bembridge Lodge buoy, and back into the Solent to finish in Cowes.
The voyage will start at 10:00 on Friday morning with Skipper’s brief before slipping lines for a day’s training out in the Solent. The training will help prepare you for the race, familiarising yourself with the yacht and learning about race tactics such as using the tide, sail trimming and race helming. During this time you will also develop your team working skills and build your confidence and knowledge to safely complete the race. You will berth the night in Cowes so you can soak up all the pre-race atmosphere before an early start on Saturday morning.
Saturday is all about the race! Expect a busy ‘full on’ day. Once over the start line its all about getting the most out of the yacht. Expect to be back alongside in Cowes during the afternoon. Once back you and your crew will celebrate the day!
Sunday will be a later start with either a ‘light’ sail back to Gunwharf or a motor before departing at midday.
Please note that the evening meals on Friday & Saturday night are not included – allowing you to enjoy the atmosphere of Cowes.
