CF 171 – Girl Guides – Hartlepool to Portsmouth

Challenger YachtsChallenger 4
The girl guides boarded the Margareta at 1.00pm on Saturday 30th July. We had our safety talk and learnt all the ‘ropes’. We found our beds and realised we’d be cosy. As we had a really really early start the next day we got the boat ready to sail. We had a tasty tea of bangers and mash, a nice refreshing shower and then settled down (finding the only comfortable way to sleep is to lay straight in our bunks.)

On the 31st of July we had to get up at 5 and set sail! When we got out through the lock and once we were out we put up the main sail. Finally it was time for breakfast (not many of us had it.) We spent the morning sat in the cockpit trying not to throw up (some of us to no avail.) At about lunch time we had an attempt at sailing but it didn’t work very well – we went the wrong direction – so we had to go back to motor sailing. In the afternoon the ‘Jack Sparrow’ watch was sent to bed to get the first hours of sleep, whilst the ‘Davy Jones’ watch took down the yankee and stay sail down. The watches took turn on deck – three hours on – three hours off. It was a really beautiful night with a lot of stars (only Steve and Imo claimed to see shooting stars) and the oil rigs also lit up the night.

1st August and we arrived in Holland at 2pm in Scheveningen which none of us can pronounce. Its nice and sunny and we’ve scrubbed the decks and can’t wait to enjoy the sun!
