Cat 55 Portsmouth

Saturday 30th July 2011
At roughly 1pm most of the crew had arrived and had boarded the Cat. Our parents came on the boat to check we were happy with our sleeping arrangements etc. We then went along the pier and saw a man who had had a few too many and was shouting while he attempted to fish. Then we came back and the parents said goodbye, then we went over some vital ropes and safety precautions. We were then fitted with life jackets and then got to play monopoly. After this we went in the dingy with the mate and went under the boat, which was very fun! Then we had showers, well some did, but others would have to in the morning! Then we made tea, turkey curry and then bed.

Sunday 31st July 2011

Today we woke up and James listened to the weather .then we had some cereal got all the ropes and sails ready. Next we set of from Portsmouth and we sailed for a bit then we anchored up at thorness bay. We went to the beach in the dingy then we went for a swim. After that we set sail again for east Cowes and moored for the night. We all went to the shops in town. We all in enjoyed the day and would like to thank Steve and Neil for the fantastic day.

Monday 1st August 2011

Today we sailed from East Cowes and we goosed winged the sails throughout the Solent but then the wind changed, so we put all the sails up and coasted along at an uncomfortable, wavy 8 knots, that’s sail power for you! We passed the Needles and had to tack to get over to Studland Bay. It quite like a big dinghy but the ropes give you instant blisters, OUCH! As we approached the bay, we had to take the sails down. We managed but needed a bit of help from our helpful skippers, Neil and Steve. Then we had to lower the anchor and make tea and we found out that we had wake up at a different time to check that we hadn’t moved. When we woke up we had to check the latitude and longitude to see if the boat had moved. We didn’t move that much but we turned a round with the tide.

Tuesday 2nd August 2011

We woke up in sunny studland bay and had breakfast and after that we swam around the boat and through the boat getting a fish eye view of the boat. The water was very cold but refreshing! Then we got the dinghy out and went to a lovely sandy beach where we swam in the beautiful, clear sea. After that we motored out of sunny studland bay and went around the headland. When we went around St Albans head where it was really rough and we sat at the bow of the boat. It was really fun and exhilarating. We arrived at Portland and moored up and went for a really good shower. After the shower it was time to trek up to the shop. Fiona, our trusty navigator led us completely the wrong way and it took us ages to get to the shop. Arriving at the top of what seem to be a mountain, we went and stocked up on sweets! Bart bought his mayonnaise and was very happy with that and then we all headed back. Strangely it didn’t take as long to get back, down hill was a lot easier and getting back to the boat we found we had been gone for an hour! We ate many sweets before bed and then slept on it.

Wednesday 3rd August 2011

This morning we woke up to the first day with no sun but it broke through eventually. After breakfast Bart went to get the weather while team port did the washing up. After breakfast we motored to Lulworth Cove. When we got to the cove we had a buffet lunch. Afterwards the boys jumped off the boat for half an hour whilst the girls read mags (including the amazing Fiona!!<3).

At two O’clock we headed to Weymouth. Neil decided that we all wanted to sail so he made us heave up the sails to start sailing. Because the wind was coming from where we wanted to go, we had to tack upwind which was going to take us 10 hours. This was annoying so we took the sails down and revved up the engines. Georgie and Bart got their blisters back off the ropes.

Once at Weymouth we washed the boat down so it was shining for advertisement. After our labour, we were aloud to wonder around Weymouth. Most of the time was spent looking for a milkshake shop called ‘Shakies’ that Bart said he knew where it was. When we found it, it was closed and we were late by 12 minutes! We arrived back to the boat early for once after wasting a lot of time on Bart and his milkshakes!! We decided to clean out the inner boat and our rooms tomorrow before we go home :-)

Over all, our time on the boat has been good! Fiona, Steve and Neil have been really kind and helpful! Me (Georgina) and Bart would like to say a huge thank you for your generosity and help.

By Harry, Bart and Georgina :-) :-)
