Formerly The Sail Training Association, the Tall Ships Youth Trust is a registered charity founded in 1956.
We are the UK’s oldest and largest sail training charity, dedicated to the personal development of young people age 12 to 25, through the crewing of ocean-going sail training vessels. Over 100,000 trainees have sailed 1.8 million nautical miles on our fleet over the last 60 years.
As a youth charity, we provide bursaries and funding to help young people get on board and realise their full potential.
All of our vessels are operated to the same high standards eg the same safeguarding and child protection policy, code of conduct, drug and alcohol policy; the same rigorous recruitment and screening of prospective volunteers.
Sailing as part of a Tall Ships crew makes for a participative and empowering experience and our fleet provides a unique, physically and mentally challenging residential setting in which young people can explore their true potential.
What to expect
With over 60 years experience, we are experts at teaching people about life on board an ocean-going vessel. We presume you know very little about sailing and will teach you all you need to know.
Whether you’re in education or need some time off work, all of our voyages are about having fun, new adventures and taking on a challenge. Not only will you learn to sail, you will broaden your horizons and make new friends.
Some of our voyages can be mentally and physically challenging, but you will come away with a renewed energy and enthusiasm as well as an experience you will never forget.
A Tall Ships Adventure is a unique hands-on experience. You will become an important part of the vessels crew and this involves more than just the sailing – you will also assist in the galley, help maintain the vessel as well as keep it clean.

Is the banner in which Tall Ships Youth Trust delivers its voyage programme. Tall Ships Adventures provides the ultimate sail training experience for 12 to 80 year olds. Age ranges are broken down into youth voyages for 12 to 15 and 16 to 25 and adult voyages for 18 to 80 year olds. By sailing with Tall Ships Adventures, you are helping to generate more funds that go back into bursaries to get more young people on board.
